Uniform and Equipment

Students at Harris Garrard Academy, across both our primary and secondary phases, take pride in their education and this begins each and every day by arriving to school in full uniform and prepared with all equipment.

This page gives you a summary of the uniform and PE kit for both primary and secondary students. Full details of our uniform are in our uniform policy which can be downloaded from the student welfare section of our website.


Where to purchase

All Harris Garrard Academy uniform can be purchased from our uniform supplier: Caseys Schoolwear, 246 Blackfen Road, Blackfen, Sidcup DA15 8PW, tel 020 8850 8645.

Caseys stock all of the uniform items required for all phases at the Academy. The Academy uniform can also be purchased online from Caseys.

Second hand uniform is available from the Academy directly. We cannot guarantee all items will be available in every size but we will work with families to ensure we can share what we can.

Primary uniform

Our primary uniform is smart, comfortable and practical. It reflects the aspirations of our academy and pupils are expected to wear it correctly at all times of the day. For full details, please see the uniform policy, which can be downloaded from the student welfare section of our website.

To prevent uniform getting lost, please make sure that each item is named using an iron-on, stick-on or sewn-in label, or by using a permanent naming pen.

Equipment (primary)

Students should always bring to the Academy:

  • their reading record
  • their reading book
  • their homework
  • a water bottle (water only)
  • a piece of fruit (KS2 only – this is optional)
  • PE bag (students should bring this into school every Monday and take it home every Friday to be washed)

We do not want to see in bags:

  • food (apart from a piece of fruit)
  • sweets
  • liquids other than water
  • pencil cases (these are not needed in primary as we provide all stationery)
  • toys of any kind 

Secondary uniform

Equipment (secondary)

All students in the secondary phase are required to bring the equipment listed below every single day. This will be checked daily by form tutors to ensure that students are prepared and ready to learn. If a student doesn't have a piece of equipment, then they can purchase it from the school shop before school or in their break time. Reading books can be brought from home or can be borrowed from our school library.

White ankle socks. 

Footwear 

Black Plimsolls or appropriate footwear. No branded trainers. 

Children may also do indoors PE in bare feet. 

PE Bag 

Academy drawstring PE bag, navy with logo, as supplied by our uniform supplier or alternatively a plain drawstring bag in blue or black (no stripes, patterns or logos)

Plain navy tracksuit.

PE Polo Shirt 

White with academy logo, as supplied by our uniform supplier or alternatively a plain white polo shirt (no frills, patterns or logos)  

PE Shorts 

Plain red shorts, unbranded (no stripes or logos)  

PE Socks 

White ankle socks or white sports socks 

PE Trainers 

Laced trainer which is sturdy and supportive for physical activity 

Trainers must have non-marking soles. Plimsolls/canvas shoes must not be worn. 

PE Bag 

Academy drawstring PE bag, navy with logo, as supplied by our uniform supplier or alternatively a plain drawstring bag in blue or black (no stripes, patterns or logos) 

 

Other bags, including holdalls and carrier bags, are not permitted. 

PE Tracksuit (optional) 

Plain navy blue sweatshirt and jogging bottoms, with no logos or side-stripes. 

No full-length zipped tops 

No hoods on sweatshirts 

 

White under top (optional) 

Must be a white undertop 

PE polo shirt must be worn over the top  


  • We do not allow caps in school
  • We do not allow trainers in school
  • We do not allow hoodies in school
  • We do not allow jewellery in school including earrings
  • Children should not bring any toys into school

Mobile phones

No mobile phones, iPods, MP3/4 players or headphones. If seen or heard, items will be confiscated.


At Harris Garrard Academy we have the following core principles relating to uniform that apply across ALL phases of the Academy:

  • Shirts are always tucked in
  • Ties have a minimum of five stripes showing at ALL times
  • Ties are correctly fitted with the knot covering the top button
  • Top buttons are always fastened
  • Skirts to be worn unrolled at ALL times
  • Blazers are not negotiable and should be worn at ALL times (can be removed in classroom with permission)
  • Shoes are worn at ALL times
  • Jewellery is not permitted onsite. This includes no earrings for ALL students (except Post 16)
  • Handbags are not allowed onsite (except Post 16)
  • Hoodies are not allowed in the Academy or on site at ALL. Students should not travel to the Academy wearing them. They will be confiscated and returned at the discretion of the Academy or disposed of in line with DfE guidance on banned items
  • Make up is not permitted
  • False nails and nail varnish are not permitted
  • False eyelashes are not permitted

Sixth Form dress code

Sixth Form students must be smartly dressed at all times, as they would be if working in a smart professional environment. Students are role models for the rest of Harris Federation and as such need to be smartly presented at all times.  

Identity cards with lanyards must be visible at all times. 

Uniform 

  • Formal business jacket
  • Formal business trousers
  • Formal business skirts - must be at least knee length and should not be tight or ‘bodycon’ styles
  • Formal business dress. Dresses must not be tight or ‘bodycon’ styles
  • Formal shirt and tie, with top button done up
  • Formal blouse – must not be sheer
  • Formal shoes
  • Plain, dark jumper (optional)
  • Shirts and blouses must remain tucked-in at all times 
  • Suit jackets must be worn at all times in corridors and public areas of the Academy
  • Identity cards with lanyards must be visible at all times
  • Jewellery and make up to be kept at a minimum
  • Students wishing to wear Islamic dress should wear a simple silhouette jilbab and a hijab.  Both garments should not be over embellished. A formal business jacket should also be worn. 

The following are not permitted: 

  • No hooded shirts, tops or jumpers
  • Casual style dresses such as strapless and spaghetti strap dresses
  • Denim trousers, jackets, shirts, blouses or skirts  
  • Casual trousers – combats, track suits, leggings  
  • Casual tops – track suit, fleeces, T-shirts, hooded tops, vest tops  
  • Shorts, tight narrow legged trousers, trousers made of stretchy legging-type material  
  • Sportswear  
  • Knee high socks and leg warmers 
  • Trainers, canvas shoes, or leisure shoes/pumps  
  • Casual boots such as Ugg Boots and Timberlands  
  • Patterns or shapes cut into hair or eyebrows and brightly coloured hair. This includes mohicans or tram lines  
  • Gloves, hats, caps, do rags, bonnets and bandanas  
  • Coloured shoelaces  
  • Clothing made of sheer/transparent materials  
  • Tattoos should not be visible. Visible body piercing is restricted to the ears and/or one small nose stud only. Bars, scaffolds and stretchers are not permitted.  

Students will be sent home if they do not conform to the dress code. Parents/carers will be contacted on the first occasion a student is required to be sent home in relation to a dress code violation. A Sixth Form detention will also be issued. In the event of any subsequent digression from the dress code, the student will be issued with a verbal warning and sent home to change, but no contact will be made with the parent/carer.  

Harris Garrard is committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for all pupils and we aim to develop a culture of inclusion and diversity, so all feel proud of their identity and ability to participate in school life. This extends to uniform and choices made (in accordance with the above) by our students to reflect their own beliefs and identity. It is beyond the scope of the policy to provide guidance on every eventuality. In the event of queries, the Head of Sixth Form will act as the arbiter. If in any doubt, students should check with the Head of Sixth Form before purchasing items.
