Teaching & Learning
So what's it like to being a Sixth Form student at Harris Garrard Academy?
Crucially, you’ll be taught by subject experts who know how to make challenging topics clear and memorable.
Lessons are designed to push you further – using activities, discussion and debate to help you master key ideas and develop your confidence. Small classes mean more time with teachers and more chance to have your voice heard.
Feedback that helps you improve
You’ll get regular quizzes, assessed work and quick, personalised feedback so you always know how you’re doing and how to improve. Teachers give clear guidance on what top-level work looks like and will support you to get there.
"The lessons are always interesting and teachers know how to get the best out of me." Fictional quote.
Independent study
You’ll have planned lessons, study periods and homework each week. We’ll guide you on how to use your free time effectively, manage your workload and build strong habits in research, reading and exam practice – essential skills for university, apprenticeships or work.
As a guide, for each subject you take at Sixth Form you can expect:
- Five hours of lesson time with your teacher(s) – these lessons are carefully planned to help you learn new material, practise key skills and get ready for assessments.
- Three hours of private study during your “free” periods – use this time to consolidate what you’ve learned, commit new information to memory, read around your subject, do extra exam practice and complete any prep for your next lesson. Aim to do a bit of prep before every class so you’re ready to take part.
- Two hours of homework set by your teacher – this will have a clear deadline and is usually essay writing, exam practice or another activity your teacher will give you feedback on.
This structure helps you stay on top of your work, build independence and make real progress.
