At Harris Garrard Academy, we believe that learning Mandarin Chinese opens doors to a wider world of opportunity, cultural understanding and future success.

As one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, Mandarin equips students with valuable linguistic, cultural and cognitive skills that prepare them for life beyond school.

Our Chinese curriculum develops students' confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing, whilst fostering a deep appreciation of Chinese culture and contemporary society. Beginning with pinyin, tones and the Chinese writing system, students gradually build the knowledge and skills needed to communicate with increasing accuracy and fluency.

A distinctive feature of learning Mandarin is the opportunity to engage with both spoken and written language through pinyin and Chinese characters. In doing so, students strengthen their literacy, memory, resilience and problem-solving skills while gaining insight into different cultures, perspectives and ways of life.

Our curriculum is built around six core concepts:

• Speaking
• Reading
• Writing
• Translation
• Culture

Alongside language learning, students explore key aspects of Chinese culture, including Chinese New Year, the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, traditional customs, food, geography and modern China. Authentic materials and cultural experiences help bring the language to life and develop students' understanding of the wider world.

Studying Mandarin also provides students with valuable cultural capital and an insight into careers linked to international business, trade, technology, tourism, diplomacy and translation. As China's influence on the global stage continues to grow, language skills offer students a significant advantage in future education and employment.

Our ambition is that every student leaves Harris Garrard Academy with the confidence to communicate across cultures, an understanding of the Chinese-speaking world and an appreciation of how language learning can broaden horizons and create future opportunities.
