Sociology
Sociology aims to spark curiosity about society and equip students with the ability to apply sociological theories to real-world contexts.
The course develops critical thinking, evaluation, and application skills alongside literacy and numeracy, preparing students for higher education and careers where analytical and research skills are valued. Students learn to question social structures and explore how institutions, beliefs, and inequalities shape everyday life.
At Key Stage 4, learners begin with core sociological concepts before examining families, education, and social stratification. They then progress to crime and deviance, exploring patterns in crime statistics and issues of social control. Research Methods are integrated throughout, enabling students to make synoptic links and understand how evidence underpins sociological arguments. By the end of Year 11, students are confident in applying theory to contemporary issues and constructing well-reasoned responses.
At Key Stage 5, the A-level curriculum deepens this knowledge through units on education, families, beliefs in society, and crime and deviance, alongside advanced theory and methods. Students engage with debates on secularisation, social inequality, and cultural change, developing transferable skills in research, analysis, and argumentation. These skills open pathways to careers in law, social work, criminology, journalism, public policy, and marketing, as well as progression to university-level study in social sciences.
