Psychology

Our Psychology A Level provides students with a deep understanding of human behaviour and the scientific tools used to study it.

Our aim is to help students think and communicate like psychologists – developing inquisitive, reflective and empathic approaches to two fundamental questions: what shapes human thought and behaviour, and how can this knowledge be applied to improve lives?

Students are encouraged to use the language of psychology to understand themselves and the world around them, which is assessed through lesson observations, presentations, research projects, and student feedback.

Throughout the course, students explore a wide range of research on human behaviour and learn to critically evaluate its validity. They apply psychological principles to real-world scenarios, developing analytical and problem-solving skills. In Year 12, topics include Approaches to Psychology, Biopsychology, Research Methods, Memory, Social Influence, and Attachment, alongside revision and end-of-year exams. Students also gain practical experience through work placements, reinforcing the real-world relevance of psychological knowledge.

In Year 13, the curriculum expands to cover advanced topics such as Biopsychology, Schizophrenia, Relationships, Forensic Psychology, and Issues and Debates, with further focus on Research Methods. Psychology is unique because it demands a varied skill set – scientific, mathematical, and literacy skills – making it both challenging and rewarding.

The breadth of topics and skills ensures that students remain engaged and curious, often seeking knowledge beyond the specification. This combination of theory, application, and critical thinking makes Psychology an exciting subject that prepares students for diverse academic and career pathways.

“Learning about psychology helps me understand why people think, feel, and behave the way they do. I’ve found the subject fascinating. My favourite topic so far has been psychodynamic approaches, as they explore how past experiences and unconscious processes shape who we are. Studying this has reinforced my passion for helping others by becoming a therapist.” Jack, Year 12
