Politics
Studying Politics provides students with a critical understanding of the systems and ideas that shape societies.
Our A Level curriculum is designed to develop analytical thinking, informed debate, and a deep awareness of democratic processes and political ideologies. Students explore key concepts, institutions, and debates within both UK and global political landscapes, gaining the skills to engage confidently with contemporary political issues.
In Year 12, students begin with UK Politics and Government. They examine political participation, electoral systems, voting behaviour, and the role of media, alongside core ideologies such as Conservatism, Liberalism, and Socialism. They also study the UK constitution, the roles of Parliament, the executive, and the judiciary, and accountability within government. Additionally, students explore one non-core ideology – such as Feminism, Nationalism, or Ecologism – investigating its principles, divisions, and key thinkers.
Year 13 focuses on Comparative Politics, with an in-depth study of the US political system. Students analyse the Constitution, government structures, civil rights, and checks and balances, while comparing these features with the UK system. They consider how US politics influences global affairs and evaluate whether ideals like “liberty and justice for all” have been achieved. This course equips students with critical thinking and communication skills, preparing them for further study in politics, law, international relations, or journalism, and fostering active citizenship in a democratic society.
“I love my Politics lessons because I enjoy learning about different viewpoints and understanding how people come to their opinions. Our teacher is amazing and makes every discussion engaging. The subject has inspired me to pursue a career as a corporate lawyer, where I can use these skills to analyse arguments, think critically, and make a real impact.” Alyssa, Year 12
