Computing & IT

Computing and computer science are at the cornerstone of future learning for our students – helping to prepare the next generation for the changing world of technology.

We are lucky to have dedicated ICT suites in both primary and secondary, as well as mobile computer units to take the learning into other spaces around the school. These superb resources give us the chance to build strong digital literacy across the school, with touch typing and a key focus on the hardware involved from an early age.

Primary computing and IT  - from coding to online safety

HGA 2024 Day2 057

In Early Years, students begin this journey with coding simply robotic toys, going on to using complex coding software as they move through primary and secondary.

We also understand the dangers of technology and, through our online safety programmes, equip students with the skills they need to make sensible choices and keep themselves safe in the digital world.

Students are even able to get involved in IT outside the classroom, supported by our Digital Leader in primary and even a Coding and Robotics Club available to all students.

“Computing is my favourite lesson. We used Purple Mash to look at how some emails can have viruses and saw when not to click on attachments.” Tierney, Year 6

Secondary computing and IT – preparing for advanced learning

Our secondary curriculum builds on the strong foundations established in primary education, extending core concepts and deepening knowledge to prepare students for advanced learning.

The curriculum is built around the three core strands of the National Curriculum – Digital Literacy, Information Technology, and Computer Science. At Key Stage 3, students gain a strong foundation in programming, data representation, and online safety. At Key Stage 4, they choose between the vocational Cambridge National Certificate in IT or the academic Computer Science pathway, while Key Stage 5 focuses exclusively on advanced Computer Science, including programming, algorithms, and computer systems. Lessons increase in frequency and depth at each stage to support progression and mastery.

The curriculum aims to develop coding proficiency, safe and ethical online behaviour, effective communication through digital platforms, and strong problem-solving skills.

Students learn to design, create, and evaluate digital products, manipulate data, and understand the interconnected nature of modern systems. Through practical projects and advanced programming, learners build resilience, critical thinking, and independence, preparing them for further study and careers in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

“I love my Computer Science curriculum because I want to work with computers when I’m older, and I really enjoy coding. My favourite program to use is Python, because it makes problem‑solving fun and lets me create things on my own.” Far’han, Year 9
