Mathematics

We love our maths lessons at HGA! The journey to maths confidence starts in our superb Reception classes, where we work on building the foundational skills in number, shape and pattern-finding.

This supports our students as they delve into more complex problems and mathematics later on across the school.

Our pedagogical approach delivers a clear progression from hands on resources, through pictorial representations before discovering the abstract world of number and algebra. Our incredible outcomes are a testament to the quality of teacher specialism we have in this fundamental subject.

Primary maths - a mastery approach

HGA 2024 Primary Day2 009

Lessons are built around clear modelling of core concepts and a mastery approach which means students can develop their learning through variation in the way they are shown how to solve problems.

Students feel confident in our maths lessons and can articulate the methods and procedures they use to help find elusive answers.

Further online programmes help supplement the curriculum with weekly Times Table Rock Star competitions happening between the students and even with the staff.

“I used to find maths lessons really hard at my old school but Miss has a way of explaining it which makes it easier or finds me another way.” Isabella, Year 4

“The students beat me every week in the times table speed challenges! Our Year 4s, with their multiplication check work, have incredible speed of recall. I’ll need to keep trying to keep up!” Mr Sheppard, Head of Primary

Secondary maths - deepening understanding

HGA 2024 Day2 095

At Key Stage 3, lessons progress from Primary by deepening understanding, making connections across mathematics, and providing challenge through reasoning and problem-solving. Schemes of work include core content with opportunities for extension through ‘core+’ and ‘advanced’ tasks. Each year builds on prior learning, with interleaving to revisit key concepts and strengthen retention.

At Key Stage 4, the curriculum follows the AQA GCSE Mathematics specification, building on Key Stage 3 foundations. Students follow either the foundation or higher tier based on assessments. Problem-solving and reasoning are embedded throughout, and teachers adapt the scheme of work in Year 11 based on ongoing assessments and mock exams. The focus is on mastery – developing fluency, applying techniques to solve problems, and reasoning mathematically.

At Key Stage 5, A-level Mathematics offers a comprehensive program across Pure Mathematics, Statistics, and Mechanics. Students build on GCSE skills while tackling advanced topics, developing fluency, problem-solving, and the ability to interpret and communicate mathematical information. Mathematics is highly valued by employers for its analytical and problem-solving skills, opening pathways to careers in engineering, finance, public services, teaching, and academia, as well as further study at degree level and beyond.

“I really enjoy the logic and reasoning involved in solving problems. It makes me think carefully and work things out step by step, and I know it will help me in the future because I want to work in mergers and acquisitions when I’m older.” Saainishan, Year 8
