Modern Foreign Languages
Hola! Welcome to Spanish at Harris Garrard.
We are proud to be an International School, as recognised by the British Council, for our work expanding the Spanish curriculum, including through links with schools in Spain and Abu Dhabi.
Students regularly have the chance to speak virtually with these schools and share ideas as well as their growing language skills.
Although the national curriculum only requires Modern Foreign Languages to begin in Year 3, we believe that the learning of language can only help our students from the very beginning. Our Spanish specialist therefore starts with our Reception students, building relationships and introducing them to the Spanish language.
In Year 1 and 2 we then build on this by teaching students stories they know, but through Spanish. By the time students are in Year 3, they already have a strong start in this wonderful language.
As students move through the school, with more joining in Year 7, we again build on the importance of oracy with the students and design our curriculum to include consistent levels of communication across Spanish. Students can therefore speak confidently from an early age before building their writing and cultural experience of Spanish.
This is why our Spanish Day, is one of our favourites in the yearly calendar!
