Music
No matter where you are across our school, you’ll probably be able to hear the voices and instruments of our dedicated music departments.

Primary music - the start of a musical journey
Music and song is at the heart of Harris Garrard Academy. It all begins in our Reception classes, with their own year around performance space.
From there, our music curriculum takes our students on a journey of voice, instrument, beat and expression as we explore different mediums and styles. By the time students reach secondary our performance area becomes a weekly Friday celebration of song and dance.
Our lessons focus on providing students with the best chance for creation of their own pieces, and provide key knowledge to enable students to write their own music.
Outside of the classroom, the music doesn’t miss a beat with peripatetic instrument lessons available for students in Year 3 and up. We have a dedicated choir who attend annual events such as Young Voices and even our teachers will sing a carol or two at our Christmas event!
Secondary music - inspiring a passion

At Key Stage 3, our music curriculum aims to inspire a passion for music by developing performance, composition, and appraisal skills across classical, popular, and world genres, while introducing students to music technology.
At Key Stage 4, BTEC Music builds on these foundations, allowing students to create music through technology and live recording. Students have access to specialist software, one-to-one instrumental and technology lessons, and a wide range of instruments, culminating in three components that reflect industry standards.
Beyond technical skills, music education fosters creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, and resilience. Students learn craftsmanship, discipline, and the value of sustained effort, while gaining confidence through performance and risk-taking.
Musical training enhances cognitive development, wiring the brain for language and analytical thinking, and equips learners with transferable skills essential for success in any career.
“I really enjoy the music curriculum because we get to actually play music and learn an instrument, which makes lessons fun and exciting. Music is everywhere - you can’t really find a place without it - so learning it feels relevant to everyday life.” Harley, Year 9
