Physical Education

We provide an absolute wealth of sporting opportunities as part of our PE curriculum. With PE specialists at all levels, from reception to sixth form, we know are students get a superb start across sports and physical fitness.

Our curriculum is built to help studets develop key skills that are fundamental to a range of sports, growing in complexity as the students move through the school.

This means that students move into more complex games and are able to take part in a wide range of competitive sport from primary to secondary. This includes the chance to take their skills out of the classroom, with clubs in football, rugby, netball, climbing and even roller blading, to name but a few.

Primary PE - mastering key skills

Hga 2024 secondary 8

We’re so proud of the focus and determination in our sports lessons. You’ll even see ping pong being played in the centre of our school during learning time. Lessons focus on mastering key skills across different sports and then providing engaging activities to help hone these skills.

With facilities that include weekly swimming lessons for our Year 5s and even a climbing wall on site – there is little that can’t be achieved with our PE team. Outcomes speak for themselves with our students regularly in first place across Bexley for netball, football, rugby and cross-country. Each year for the last four years we’ve even made the London Youth Games, with a top eight place in Indoor Athletics last year.

“I’ve been in the Indoor Athletics team for Long Jump and Speed Bounce the last two years and the practices at lunch time with Mr Green had me win my group – now I’m going to the London Youth Games!” Keyon, Year 6

Secondary PE - individual and team development

Hga 2024 secondary 11

Our secondary PE curriculum builds on the strong foundations developed in our primary phase, ensuring continuity in skills, knowledge, and values.

At Key Stage 3, students refine techniques across a wide range of sports, including those introduced in Year 6 and new activities such as lacrosse and trampolining. The focus is on both individual and team development, promoting core values like teamwork, resilience, and determination while fostering a lifelong commitment to health and physical activity.

At Key Stage 4, students follow one of two pathways: the Cambridge National in Sport Studies (CNAT) or core PE. The CNAT qualification combines theory with practical elements, including leadership and coaching, while core PE provides non-externally assessed opportunities to remain active through varied sports. Both routes aim to deepen understanding of physical education, encourage personal bests, and prepare students for healthy lifestyles beyond school.

At Key Stage 5 the Level 3 OCR National Sport course develops advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, coaching, fitness training, and the business of sport, combining theory with practical application. Students gain leadership, communication, and analytical skills that prepare them for careers in coaching, physiotherapy, sports management, fitness instruction, and teaching, as well as progression to university-level sports studies.
