Year 10 Football - Harris Garrard Academy 3 Hurstmere 6

FootballThis 5th round Kent Cup tie was always going to be a very tough encounter against a strong Hurstmere team that reached the semi-finals of the National Cup last season.

Our boys got off to a slow start and could not adapt to the fast passing and movement from the Hurstmere team. Within five minutes Seun hit a free kick into the box which bounced awkwardly for the goalkeeper and looked like it was going to loop into the goal. However the Hurstmere keeper pulled off a great save to tip it over the bar.

Confidence

This was against the run of play and would have given the boys confidence if it had gone in. After this chance the boys were chasing shadows as the slick quick passing from the Hurstmere team and the movement was excellent.

A shot from one of the Hurstmere players did not look to trouble Eimantas, however he somehow started to juggle with the ball and it fell out of his hands for the Hurstmere striker, who was gifted with an early Christmas present, just to tap the ball into the open net.

This led to another three goals being scored in quick succession and at half time the boys were 4-0 down and the total lack of shape had to be addressed.

Display to be proud of

The second half was a display to be proud of and Ayo scored one back within the first five minutes with a great solo run and hit a low shot into the corner of the net to make it 4-1.

This gave the boys a lot of confidence and they deserved to get another back with a great run from Seun, who cut the ball across to Tafeeq who hit his shot over the bar. Hurstmere then broke away and made it 5-1, which was hard to take for the boys.

However they did not give up and showed a lot of character and again it was Ayo who made a great run onto a pass from Samuel and again netted to make it 5-2.  Chances were coming either end and Hurstmere’s winger managed to tuck away a great curling shot into the corner to make it 6-2.

Determined performance

In the final stages of the game the boys continued to create chances and from a great cross from Seun, who had a fine game put it into the box.  Ayo headed the ball goal-bound into the top corner for his hatrick, but the keeper somehow managed to force the ball back out and luckily Samuel was there to smash the ball into the back of the net on the final whistle making it 6-3.

A very determined performance from the boys and a performance to be very proud of.  Well done boys.
